What Makes Foil Drive Stand Out for Wake Thieving?
Wake thieving is riding the energy a boat already made. Foil Drive is what makes that practical instead of a one-shot dock start.
No boat required. Billy’s line in the video is the whole pitch: with a Foil Drive unit, you literally do not need your own boat. Launch from a public dock, private dock, or private beach. Motor out to a passing wake, get on foil, and ride. When the boat leaves, you still have power to get home.
The boat never has to stop. That is the group-session unlock. In Oviedo the Mastercraft kept circling while three, four, five, even six foil drivers ran at once. - High mast position — motor out, get on foil, then the prop comes clear of the water so you ride the wake clean. Straps, airs, big boards or small boards. Possibilities are endless.
Instant recovery. After a fall you don’t wait for the boat to swing back. Hit the throttle, get back on foil, and rejoin the first, second, or third roller. Official Foil Drive wake guidance is the same: chase the moving wake, recover without changing the boat’s line, and stay higher on the mast than you think so the pod doesn’t drag.

Common Questions About Foil Drive Wake Thieving
What is wake thieving? Riding a foil on the wake of a boat you are not necessarily towed behind. Once you are on foil you surf the first, second, or third roller. Foil Drive lets you motor onto that wake and recover after a fall without a rope or a dock start.
Do I need my own boat? No. That is the point of the Oviedo video. Launch from a dock or beach and use wakes that are already there. If you do own a boat, Foil Drive is even better: the driver never stops, and several foilers can share the same loop.
Is this only for advanced riders? No. Low mast position and a higher-volume board make first sessions feel like a gentle e-foil. Advanced riders move the motor higher, add straps, shrink the board, and use the wake for airs and long carves.
Slim, Max, or Fusion for wake foiling?
- Assist Slim — lighter, more performance-oriented, enough power for assist-style wake riding.
- Assist Max — more thrust and runtime; the usual pick for easy wake packages and heavier riders.
- Fusion — hybrid assist + longer e-foil-style runtime (roughly 40–90 minutes heavy use, 90–135 minutes light use). Max/Slim batteries are not compatible with Fusion.
Where should the motor sit on the mast? Lower for learning and surface motoring. Higher for clean wake riding so the prop is out of the water once you are flying. Stay higher than you think so the pod doesn’t drag. Integrated masts (Armstrong around a 185 mm pod height, Slingshot One Lock, North/Sonar) keep the system cleaner than a bulky universal mount. The Universal Mini Pod is the big feel upgrade if you are still on a strap-on pod.
What board should I use? Whatever you already foil on works. Bigger volume is easier for first wake sessions. Smaller, thinner wake/tow boards (Armstrong WKT, Unifoil Small Fry / Potato Chip, dedicated Foil Drive boards like North Boost, Appletree Zapple, Jimmy Lewis Super Fly FD) feel more connected once you are comfortable. Straps help for airs and control.
How do I get back to the boat after a fall? Throttle on, get on foil, motor back into the wake. The boat keeps its line. That is why six people can ride at once.
Is it legal / good etiquette? Be the rider Brad Evers talks about in our other Foil Drive review: stay risk-averse, give other water users space, and don’t wreck the lineup or the ski boat’s session. Ask before using a private wake when you can. Public-lake courtesy still applies.
Will it work on oceans and rivers too? Yes. Same system we use for small Florida swell, downwinders, and dock-to-dock lake runs. Wakes from ferries, barges, and passing traffic are fair game where it’s safe and legal.
What about batteries and props? Wake work uses more motor than a clean ocean glide. Max or Fusion capacity helps. Three-blade or low-range props add low-end bite for takeoffs and messy surface motoring. Keep a spare battery if the boat is going to loop all afternoon.
Can I use the Foil Drive I already own? Yes. Slim, Max, and Fusion all wake-thieve. Add the Mini Pod or an integrated mast if you want less drag and cleaner touchdowns.
